English Education through Internet

The concept of a college classroom has begun to change with the advent of internet. Computers are becoming an integral part of the life and education and virtual classrooms are fast becoming a reality. Educators all over the world and in India,  especially, are being challenged to rethink and revise their approaches and goals in teaching. In India, teachers and course designers need to become aware of the available programmes and find ways of integrating them in their regular courses.

The concept of a college classroom, as a room with four walls located in a building on a campus with desks and chairs which face a chalkboard and teacher who interacts with a group of students in real time, has begun to change with the advent of internet.  This is no longer the only option for teaching and learning. Technology and computers in particular are becoming integral parts of our life and education and virtual classrooms are fast becoming reality.

Virtual Classroom

As karla Frizler (1995) says a virtual classroom is one which is created by the teachers and students specially to suit their own purposes and needs.  As the purpose and needs change the classroom also changes.

....a virtual classroom could be located on Mars, or on a beach in Greece, or in an online campus simulating a traditional classroom. It may contain desks and chairs, and have a chalkboard on the wall, and it may not.  Virtual classrooms, of course, have teachers, but may or may not be in the same space with their students at the same time.  Communication between teaches and students can take place either asynchronously (at different times) synchronously (at the same time), or both.
