Tips to Improve Your
English
1. Set Yourself a Goal
What you want to learn? Once you learn that how will you use it? Who will you speak with?
Visualize a rosy picture of yourself speaking English fluently and participating in a conversation with that
person.
2. Listen With Interest.
Listen to English songs and sing to yourself, hum them whenever you can. Listen to English
news. Watch an interesting programme on TV in English. Try to repeat the dialogues of the characters you watch
on TV. When you listen to a regional language programme carefully note the English expressions that are used and
repeat them to yourself.
3. Speak In English
Try to speak in English with a child, a friend or anyone who is not too critical. If you
cannot find anyone to speak in English, speak to yourself. Suppose you are walking or traveling and going to
meet someone, keep talking to yourself silently, in English, as if you are talking to that person. Do not be shy
to talk in English. Seize every opportunity you get to practice your English. The confidence with which you
speak will make a good impression on others. If you stop worrying about the mistakes and think of what
you can say well, your confidence will increase.
4. Read English
Start with very simple story
books and develop a reading habit. Reading
will help you develop the Speaking and Writing skills
too. When you come across dialogues in the stories
try to read them aloud in a natural manner. Try to repeat the expressions to yourself without looking into the
book. Read everything around you. Read the boards you see in English, notices, news papers, cartoon strips and
anything else you find around you. If you are interested in cooking read recipes in English, if you love
painting read something about it in English. That is, choose the topic of your interest and read it in English.
5. Write English
Start a diary and write about all your feelings, daily activities and anything that interests
you. Do not worry about mistakes. Even if you write partly in your first language and partly in English, it is
ok. Diary writing is similar to talking to yourself. Talk to yourself in English and write to yourself in
English. If possible, find a friend or younger brother or a child who will be happy to receive your letters and
will read it without criticism. Share information about interesting things with that person through
writing.
6. Expand Your Vocabulary
Decide to learn at least one new word /phrase every day. Throughout the day try to use the
word while talking to yourself or writing your diary. Write the word on a card and carry it along with you.
Whenever you need to wait for something for a few minutes, take up the card and have a look at it. Put all the
cards in a file and revise the words of the week and month. Associate each word with a picture, a known context,
a similar word in the first language or a funny incident. These will make a deep impression on your mind and
help you remember the word for a longer time.
7. Learn Grammar In Context
Try to learn phrases and simple expressions in context. Concentrate on the meaning you want to
convey. Try to convey it using very simple sentences and short phrases. Do not worry too much about grammatical
mistakes. The more you listen, the more you read and the more you try your hand at speaking and writing your
thoughts, your grammar will improve. Imitate good speakers and writers and try to learn chunks of language.
Apply whatever you learn by using them in context to express your own ideas.
